Professional biography

Dr John Gibbons is the founder, Principal Gastroenterologist and Director of Medical Services at Eastern Endoscopy Centre.

He graduated from The University of Queensland and completed his advanced training at Greenslopes Private Hospital and the Royal Brisbane Hospital. He later moved to Sydney to undertake advanced therapeutic and Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangio-Pancreatogram (ERCP) training at Westmead Hospital. Upon returning to Brisbane, he worked as a senior Visiting Medical Officer (VMO) at the Royal Brisbane Hospital for more than 10 years while successfully establishing his independent private practice.

Dr Gibbons notes that advanced therapeutic endoscopy has revolutionised patient care by enabling the definitive management of specific pre-malignant and early malignancies without requiring invasive surgical resection. He notes that this clinical area continues to rapidly develop, with the broadening role of the therapeutic endoscopist providing further professional challenges and delivering many direct benefits to patients. Having built a highly respected clinical presence over several decades, he considers his greatest professional achievement to be his successful career for over 25 years.
