Professional biography

Dr Kate Cayzer entered medical school as a mature-aged student after initially studying science, going on to graduate with a PhD in Immunobiology. She then worked extensively as a research scientist investigating the immunobiology of various liver diseases, with a core focus on Hepatitis B. She has been a practising gastroenterologist since 2003, running a busy private practice while concurrently dedicating a decade of service to the Royal Brisbane Hospital. During her ten-year tenure at the Royal Brisbane Hospital, she served as a key co-investigator involved in numerous clinical trials evaluating novel therapies for patients with diverse liver conditions.

While Dr Cayzer describes herself as a general gastroenterologist with broad interests across private practice, her extensive scientific background means she maintains a deep clinical focus on hepatology. She actively monitors the field, noting both exciting therapeutic developments—such as the advent of highly effective oral agents for treating Hepatitis C (HCV)—as well as more concerning trends, including the increasing incidence of fatty liver disease and its clear clinical association with hepatocellular carcinoma. Her medical group consistently reviews the latest international developments in hepatology and luminal gastroenterology through regular journal club sessions and attendance at local and international scientific meetings. Beyond liver disease, she has gained significant clinical experience managing complex inflammatory bowel disease and is equally dedicated to providing care for difficult-to-manage irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) patients.
